Ok... What did we learn?
I just got off the phone with the Ammo Manufacturer. This was Ultramax remanufactured ammunition. I spoke with their customer service rep today. He believes it was a case failure due to age. It happens from time to time but they have never been able to recreate it. He has offered to replace all of my ultramax ammo with newly made stuff.
As for the Beretta...
Turns out the 92f has a bit of a safety feature designed in just for this kind of failure. Several of the internals pop out and nothing breaks. According to ammo guys... reassembly is all that is required. They still told me to ship it to beretta and have them fix it, and told me to either have beretta bill them or if beretta refused they would reimburse me for the costs.
Can't complain.
I'm on hold with Beretta right now. We'll see what they say. So far I am impressed with Ultramax's service... and if what they say is true... I'm impressed with the 92f as well.

Their explanation seems reasonable to me. A modern factory loading operation has at least 3 safety check stages that are designed to keep double charges from happening. A second ammo related explanation would have been a defective primer. Either way it sounds like they are doing the right thing.
It will be interesting to see what Berretta says. My guess is that they will want you to send it in and they will put it back together again after examining the parts to ensure they are functional and not weakened from the case failure.
Glad to know you are OK and it's all working out for you.
Glad to see Ultramax is standing behind their product.
Hope it all goes smoothly, and glad everyone is ok.
Wow, that's top notch of them...cool.
So beretta was also very cool about the whole thing. They said to ship it to them and they would take it back to factory new... and they would contact ammomax and work out the payment with them.
I won't even be billed for it.
booyaa.
Glad you are OK. Looks like the Almighty had your back.

I wonder if the metal in the Beretta offers more protection from catastrophic failure versus polymer.
There is a product innovation opportunity here, perhaps a light weight shooting glove with kevlar to protect the shooters hand in case of a catastrophic failure
Cheds... if you get the chance give the 92f a looking over. compared to a glock it is a giant beefy hunk of metal.
1. Good to see that you came through unharmed. A little harder to operate a throttle with a mangled hand than not.
2. Good to see customer service is still what it used to be, at least some places.
3. Also good to see you posting stuff again, besides just music videos. I was beginning to think you were auditioning to become an MTV VJ.
Beretta . . .coming soon to Tennessee
Toothy,
Attending the AMGA monthly meeting last week made my week. What I gathered on the PKM kits is that they all can be rebuilt if you have the right bits of paper filled out and have jumped through the appropriate gov't hoops. The kits in the $1,000-$1,500 price range are most likely PKT's. That's the tank version and is set up to be fired from an electrically controlled solenoid, thus it lacks the mounting features for a grip or finger driven trigger assembly. The rear part of the receiver is believed to be configured differently.
Thanks, ajw.
Nate,
I have the same model in 40 caliber stainless, used to be a cop gun. i always liked beefy metal guns vs the plastic ones. I wonder how many plastic guns are heirloom quality. IMO, the plastic will break down over time, planned obsolescence and all that)

I notice ammo prices are comming down on the web and in stores. Does anyone have an idea of what the new nornam might be for the common stuff, ie 5.56, 308/7.62, 9 mm and 40 cal?
thanks
i meant new normal prices for the common calibers like 223, 308, 9 mm and 40 cal
Cheddarman,

One comes out every week. Should be putting one up today.
Didn't read the whole article, but evidently Remington is doing a massive recall of their Model 700 rifle. Seems the trigger can fire all on its little lonesome.
That would be a very scary thing to happen. Just thought I would pass on the info since it is Friday after all.
A: Great Lakes Commodore Perry IPA, Knob Creek
T: Oliva Nub Habano
F: Remington 870 Express - 90's K-Mart special. Works as well as when it was new. Has some scars, and character, but still kicking...
Bring back the ATF show!!
