Grab and Go Rifle

Ok... you get a call from your buddy.  Its a last second deer hunt and he wants you to go.  You don't have time to fuss over gear to much.  What do you grab to go?

For me... there's really no question.  I'd grab the Savage 99.  It's never let me down.   I grab it almost without thinking no matter what we're hunting.

What's yours?

I get the rest of the parts for the buffer in about a week, then i need to have it mounted.

if it does not work, i will post a picture of it so you can laugh at me, but at least you will know this was not some made up stuff.

I hope i have my buffer ready before Nate has the OSU hat ready.

Avtomat Klashnikova with crappy iron sights. Why not make it a challenge?

Deer hunt? Ruger gunsite scout, .308, Burris long eye relief 3x7. Used to be win Weatherby clone in. 300 win mag (overkill on whitetail but soooo much fun to shoot), but that little ruger is just about perfect for hunting deer in the mountains where I hunt.

Stilicho - do you like the Gunsite Scout? I have a Savage Scout in .308, and I really like it. I'm not an aficionado, so I'm sure others would easily point out it's flaws...and it's been about 8 years since I went hunting, so...

Nate,

I picked up a Savage .99 at an auction. Sweet rifle, do you have any suggestions on how to put optics on it?

Heh. Touché.

Savage 99 in .308. Open ring scope mount3 so I can drop from Scope to Iron in a heartbeat.

Done and done.

Jml, I really like the gunsite scout. Accurate, lightweight, reliable, nice smooth action...it does exactly what it is supposed to do. It's a nice all round rifle.

RaggedEdge... are we talking about an ancient stock museum piece here.. or a late sixties rifle that is cool but still a work horse?

Nate said...

mine was already drilled and tapped when I got it. I wasn't looking for a cabinet queen so it didn't matter to me. if I found a late 60s model or so... I'd drill and tap it too.

The weapon is to accurate to leave it unscoped.

Though far from my "best" gun, when I need to grab and go, if we're headed to brush, I'd reach for an old Rem Model 788 in .243 with a cheap 4x scope and a short barrel. It's not much but I've hunted with it for so many years, it'll always be my grab and go and it's always mounted on a deer antler gun rack right above the back door. (Who'd steal it?) The coyotes always steer clear, still good out to 300 yards.

My newer ride is a Savage in .300 WSM topped with a Leupold. It's a nice gun and can be placed on a standing target at 500+ with enough confidence to pull with a clear conscience using a 17" overhold at that range.

Nate,

Just a late 60s model work horse. It's already been tapped, but I can't figure out what mount was on it. I'll take some pictures tomorrow and post it.

I just added a rail to a model 94. Something similar would work on a 99 I bet

Raggededge said...

Here is a picture of the 99 and the holes that have already been drilled and tapped. Any ideas as to what mount would work on this?

Raggededge,

Just my 2 cents, I think you should decide which scope you want to put on the gun first. Looking at that pic, it seems someone tried to tap it for a side mount system. I said tried because I can't tell from the pic if those holes are true taps or the result of someone drilling holes.

It looks like Weaver makes a mount for it.

Here is something that might help

If I get that call here in Texas we're likely to be hunting from a "blind" outfitted more comfortable than an Alabama vacation home, shooting relatively small deer at 50 yds, so all I need is a Glock 9mm, or slingshot....or throw rocks...

Not sure any of that is legal, so:

Iron Sights: Garand 30.06
Scoped: Custom AR 6.5 Grendel.

My only bolt gun is for annoying steel at 1000 yds, kinda' overkill for this "hunting" trip....

Nate said...

Wow. Can't help ya mate. Mine is mounted on top like a bolt gun

Raggededge said...

Nate,

Can you share a pic of yours? I guess I could just mount mine on top too.

Phased plasma rifle in the 40-watt range...unless my recoil buffer works, then it would be 338 lapua...

Not with a rifle, but my son finally called in his own turkey today.
