ATF: Struggling...

man its been one of those weeks...   Six has been down with the stomach flu...  and I made the mistake of going to the beach on a day when it was 68 and sunny.

Let me tell you when you should not go to the beach.

Also...  I should also point out...  No one will be using my blog to perpetuate the notion of home births.  Not gonna happen.  Some hippy shit I tolerate... but I have to draw the line somewhere... because honestly I hate hippies.  I mean it.  I hate... I'm using the word hate here... hippies.

And this is a big issue sometimes right especially with the nature crowd... the organic crowd... because if you're not careful... you start sounding like the stupid dirt hippies that want to live in grass huts.  So see a line has to be drawn somewhere.... and I draw on the not hippy side of popping out kids at home with no pain meds like its 1840.   This shouldn't be a surprise.  Wife's an anesthesiologist that loves OB anesthesia.
.

but...  enough of all that nonsense....  apart from checking in and wishing Mrs Seven and Baby Seven a healthy second week together in this ol' world...

A: Negra Modelo.   Negra.  They haven't been sued for that name.  Yet.  I'm convinced there are people that are to scared to order this in public.

T: I am STILL on my Rocky Patel kick.  Its either a groove or a rut.  I'll tell ya next week.

F:  Benelli Cordoba 20 guage.  fast.  Holy cow is it fast.  above average recoil... more than say the CZ I have...  but very light... very very fast.  sweet sweet semi.

On to the Show:   LINK!

and yes... I will be filling you in on the cliff hanger from last week.   Man I hope BTR doesn't fall apart again...

T: Hand rolled. Didn't you hear me the first time? cheap and dirty.

In all honesty, I dislike going to the range unless no one is there. Too much bro culture. I'd rather either be alone or shooting skeet with some old dudes in a field by a lake.

Better stories that way... or the silence.

automatthew said...

Yeah, but i have literally no excuse. A friend works at the local Federal Pen. and has free access to their range. We just never manage to go.

anyway if we're gonna shit on you it would be for drinking scotch.

Nate,

I'm kinda chewing on Vox's post from whichever day from the BOE. It's hard for me to wrap my head around this shit. I read what y'all write, and I can see it, I can follow. But I'm only getting a slice cause there's so damn much to know.

I got personal shit on my mind mostly. Should I be taking the gambles I am right now financially? It's risky for me and I got a family. I suppose that's my own damn problem though.

If I had to rattle off some random shit: Platinum? What's that about? If the BOE is admitting this shit is heavy, why the hell are they doing it? Why aren't they trying to do something about it if they understand the problem? Did You and Vox ever make an ebook for your debate?

Anyway, I just typed too much.

Nate said...

We're working on the Ebook. We'll get it out this year.

1) Keep an emergency stash of cash on hand. pay off debt... and if there is anything left...save some... and if you want to gamble with some fine.

2) This is a time to be preparing for the storm.. not starting a risky venture.

3) Platinum... like all commodities... is severely undervalued right now.

It's not that you guys were specifically boring me, but I have nothing much to contribute to an economics talk. It's just not my particular passion.

Seeing Seven do the show live was a bit of a revelation. Now I know why he sounds so animated. Dude is walking all around the house while he's talking. Antsy as a dog on a hot sidewalk.

So there I was trying to listen to the show at his desk and every time he walks within hearing range I'm hearing something in one ear that I'm about to hear 7 seconds later in the other.

I managed to listen to some of the show on my phone on the way home. Nate, Seven is just not enough of a technogeek to really get Neal Stephenson. Geeks enjoy Stephenson's writing on two different levels: the story level and the idea level.

Outlaw X said...

Sorry Nate, but boring...

Vox place has turned into 70% posts on SF/F/Scalzi/pink SF/SFWA. Now you spend a whole hour reviewing movies and books. Hard to find man stuff these days. I turned it off and let real player record the rest while watching TV and then skimmed back through the recording to find something besides and that's all there was.

Nate said...

books and movies aren't man stuff? Hey.. I gave Six shit for not like books with guns and explosions.

Nate said...

Slow week around here outlaw... I mean its the same stories we had last week..

what else we gonna talk about..

Basketball?

Outlaw X said...

Basketball?

NO-PLEASE-NO-NOT-THAT!

rycamor said...

Speaking of books, has anyone here read Robert William Chambers? "The King in Yellow"--collection of bizarre stories, but great stuff, written right around turn of the century 1900. Just read a few of them for the first time and thought "Now I know where H.P. Lovecraft got his style." Sure enough, Wikipedia lists Chambers as one of Lovecraft's influences.

rycamor said...

Call me Ishmael... yes significantly cooler than "I was born." Reminds me, I have to get back to reading the rest of Moby Dick to my son. We started it when he was 8 and he stuck through the first quarter before switching to a 500-page Sherlock Holmes anthology, which he absolutely devoured.

Amen!

I wish Vox would rent a room and him and Scalzi get a gallon of baby oil and pleasure each other all ready. If Vox could just get over his man crush and feeling all butt hurt that they kicked him out of the geeky losers club, he might get back to writing interesting stuff.

Susan said...

I couldn't listen to your show this week so you might have covered this, but why on earth is it bad to go to the beach when it is 68 degrees and sunny? Or were you just being sarcastic?

Unless the wind is blowing sand around, the Oregon coast is awesome at 68 and sunny. You just have to have decent shoes and a good jacket and hat, that is all.

Nate said...

because it feels so perfect that you forget that the sun is actually microwaving your skin.

The UV down here is... different darlin'.

2 hours on the beach in oregon with no sunscreen? no worries.

2 hours here?

Skin cancer.

Nate said...

And hey guys... cut Vox a little slack. The guy has started a freakin' publishing company... and he's running it... with just the help of Marrku and a few of the ilk.

I mean how could that not be on his radar a lot?

Outlaw X said...

"I mean how could that not be on his radar a lot? "

Why would I need to cut him slack? It's his show he can post about whatever he wants. Me pointing out that I have little interest in some stuff is not a criticism and If he wants to talk about that, what's wrong with noticing. I don't have to read those posts but still sometimes do. I don't think Res, hurt his feelings, matter fact if Vox reads it he will probably laugh like I did.

Gecko said...

That "let's you and him fight" was totally worth the phone call. Though, I could have done without Nate's hospital horror story. Ugh.

Anyway, I'm sure Vox will have more variety when the newness of CH wears off.

Res Ipsa said...

I've asked Vox about his unnatural affection for SFWA before. He's just stuck on it right now. He will either get over it, or divorce Spacebunny and move into a love nest with Scalzi and 300 cats. I doubt Vox gives a damn what I or anyone else think about it. I do what Outlaw does. I skip reading the posts.

On a more intoxicating subject, has any tried the Frank Sinatra version that Jack Daniels is promoting? What did you think about it? Is it good or just the New Coke version of Jack?

One of the worst sunburns my hubby and I got when we were dating was on the Oregon coast. His feet were burned so badly that he missed two weeks of work because he could not walk or put on shoes to drive.
Having never been down to the wonderful South were you live, I was just curious about your comment.
Being closer to the Equator than Oregonians are would definitely have it's own challenges.

Sunscreen is everybody's friend.

Susan said...

Regarding Vox, I think his readers have developed high expectations from him over the years, so I think some of those readers need the reminder about how busy he really is with his projects.

Since there is not a whole lot available with the high quality stuff that Vox offers, combined with the great discussions available, his readers get just a little spoiled. I will admit, I really like to watch the troll chewing that goes on on his site.

Although he is an uploaded super intelligence, he is, after all, still human.

I'll start caring about Vox's fiction when he finishes writing the Rebel Moon series which I first read before he had the blog. He ought to just pay Bruce to ghost write it and put it out there.

This is interesting, Nate.

"Steve, just wanted to add to your alert section. I have a nephew working
for the Remington arms plant at Lonoke, Ar. Not only the orders that DHS
has with them, apparently they are trying to get whatever ammo they can
from the plant. They also have apparently taken some control over the
plant. They made the plant install spike strips to keep vehicles from
entering. My parents retired from this plant, I've been near this place for
40 years and nothing like this has ever been done."

If Nate doesn't like it, it's "hippie shit."

I have to say... justifying hospital births over home births by saying that one time a doctor pulled a baby's head off with forceps because a woman didn't want a C-section...

Now I'm convinced that hospitals are safer!

Snicker.

You just confirmed my reasoning. Doctors ain't all that.

You need to keep smoking while the pollen is in the air.

For workers exposed to silicon dust, coal dust and asbestos the smokers had/have a lower rate of black lung/silicosis/asbestosis.

It's been theorized that the smoke puts the respiratory system in a low grade self repair mode and helps move the foreign particles out.

My source? I likely read something Joseph Mercola wrote.
